Contrapeso is an annual performing arts festival organised by Mákina de Cena, which was born out of the desire to balance municipal and regional programming with an independent and transdisciplinary artistic and cultural offer.
Over the course of four days, we propose a programme of artistic crossovers, with a particular focus on theatre and jazz, pillars of the work developed by Mákina de Cena, subject to different themes in each edition: #1 de solo a solo, #2 from paris with love, #3 gerações and #4 <no coder>.
Various national artists and structures have been programmed since 2021, such as Cia. João Garcia Miguel, Bestiário, Nariguda, outro, Mário Delgado, Carlos Barretto, The Mingus Project or João Barradas; and also international ones, such as Yngvild Aspeli's Cie. Plexus Polaire, The Latebloomers, Florent Souchet Trio or Antoine Karacostas Quartet. In 2023 Jazz.pt considered João Barradas' solo concert, part of the Contrapeso #3 Gerações programme, to be one of the ten best of the year.
program
This year's programme ranges from wordless shows, one of physical theatre whose story revolves around a family of war refugees - UNE HISTOIRE VRAIE, by Gato SA, directed by Lionel Ménard (PT/FR); and another that, through puppets and animated forms, explores the mysterious universe of nature - JACARANDÁ, by Magnum Soares / Universo Paralelo (BR/PT); as well as the unashamed reinvention of classics - AS CRIADAS by Companhia do Chapitô (PT); and even the questioning of one's identity and sense of belonging - FEMME HYBRIDE, by Ulima Ortiz (FR/CO). In between, there's also an interactive butoh dance performance, in which the audience controls the steps of the performer - ‘iMYTHOS beta2 Gods of Madness’, by Matilde J. Círia / Ni.butoh (ES).
In terms of music, we'll have the acclaimed multi-instrumentalist YESSAÏ KARAPETIAN (AM/FR), winner of the LetterOne RISING STAR Jazz Award 2021, performing for the first time in Portugal; ZÉ CRUZ QUINTETO (PT), who'll bring us ‘Kandar - tales beyond a cellar door’, a recently launched jazz project with a rock feel; and also, a solo concert by bassist ADAM BEN EZRA (IL).
