The Robertos Theatre represents one of the oldest traditions of the performing arts, not only in its European aspect – whose origin dates back to the Italian Commedia dell'Arte of the 16th century – but also in the popular heroes of the East.
In Portugal, the popular hero has survived to the present day under the name Dom Roberto, exhibiting characteristics common to all traditions: the subversive/burlesque nature of the texts and performances, the use of reeds that emit strident sounds, and the invincibility of the heroes, capable of defeating even the worst of enemies – death.
Despite having enjoyed considerable success until the 1960s, the puppet theatre of Robertos survives today in a fragmented form, based on the testimonies of the old master puppeteers. S.A.
